[Review] ZD Racing RX12 1/12 Brushless Rally Car – A Realistic Performer with Serious Power

Spread the love

ZD RACING RX-12 1:12 4WD Brushless Rally RC Car

When I first unboxed the ZD Racing RX12, I wasn’t expecting a 1:12 scale car to feel this solid. But right out of the box, it surprised me—not just with its detailed looks, but with performance that punches well above its size. After hours of testing across different terrains, it’s time to break down what this RC rally car does well, and where it could improve.

I. First Impressions & Build Quality

The RX12 immediately stands out with its authentic rally-style body, complete with simulated exhaust tips, side mirrors, roof scoops, and even LED lights with turn signal functions.

Everything feels well put together. The 2mm aluminum chassis gives it a rigid, premium feel—this isn’t some flimsy toy-grade RC car.

II. Powertrain

ZD Racing didn’t cut corners on electronics. The RX12 is powered by a Rocket 2845 3600KV brushless motor, which I found delivered snappy throttle response even on a 2S battery. On 3S, this car comes alive.

The included 35A brushless ESC supports both 2S and 3S batteries and stays cool even during extended high-speed runs.

III. Drivetrain & Suspension Test

The RX12 uses a full-time 4WD system with silicone oil-filled differentials and hardened steel gears. During testing, power delivery was smooth and cornering was precise, even at high speeds.

The highlight here is the metal-bodied hydraulic shocks. The long-travel suspension handled bumpy roads and jumps better than I expected from a 1:12 scale chassis.

IV. LED Lights, Electronics & Realism

One thing I absolutely love about the RX12 is the attention to realism. The LED lighting system isn’t just cosmetic—it features functional brake lights and turn signals, which enhances realism in low-light driving.

The 2.4GHz remote offers full-proportional control and was responsive with zero signal dropouts during my 300m+ range test.

This, combined with the detailed mirrors, grille, spoiler, and simulated decals, makes it look like a mini rally car flying across the dirt.

V. Tire Grip & Terrain Performance

The natural rubber tires (Φ60×24mm) provide excellent traction. I tested them on asphalt, loose gravel, and packed dirt. Grip was solid across the board, with minimal sliding.

It’s not an all-out basher, but it’s fast and controlled enough to hold its own on technical tracks and smooth rally paths.

VI. Size, Weight & Packaging

Here’s what you’re working with:

  • Car size: 361 × 169 × 130 mm
  • Net weight: 1.33 kg
  • Box size: 422 × 180 × 150 mm
  • 6-car pack weight: ~13 kg

It fits nicely into a backpack, making it ultra portable for casual race days.

VII. Final Verdict – Is the ZD Racing RX12 Worth It?

For under $200 (depending on where you buy it), the ZD Racing RX12 delivers big-time value. It’s realistic, powerful, and surprisingly durable. You’re getting a true 4WD brushless rally experience with aluminum parts, adjustable components, and real hobby-grade performance.

👍 Pros:

  • Realistic LED lights & scale details
  • Smooth 4WD drivetrain
  • Strong brushless motor (3S capable)
  • Aluminum chassis and adjustable suspension
  • All-around good build quality

👎 Cons:

  • No gyro or AVC support (not a dealbreaker)
  • Tires more suitable for road/gravel than rough off-road
  • Some parts are brand-specific (upgrade path may be limited)

If you’re looking for a serious 1:12 RC rally car that looks great and performs even better, the ZD Racing RX12 absolutely deserves a spot on your radar.
